A Team Approach in a Comforting, Supportive Environment
Children with complicated conditions often have many different needs involving a variety of medical specialties. Therefore, pediatric neurologists and neurosurgeons regularly team with a variety of therapists including play, physical, occupational and speech; other experts such as orthopedic and rehabilitation medicine specialists; and the children’s primary care physicians to coordinate treatment plans.
These children and their families may have other needs as well. For example, children with seizure disorders and learning disorders may have a large team “going to bat” for them: the neurologist or neurosurgeon who treats the condition with medication or surgery; the school’s teacher, principal, nurse and counselor; and family members. In this example, parents would receive education about seizures and perhaps receive counseling with a social worker to help them cope with the lack of control they may feel when their child has a seizure.
