Research using human subjects provides vital medical and scientific benefits to individuals and society. The need for this research does not, however, outweigh the need to protect individual rights and interests. At Memorial Hospital (MH), this obligation to research subjects is not only a commitment, but is undertaken with the goal of making the MH Subjects Protection Program (HSPP) an exemplary one. To achieve this goal, we have established the Research Compliance Department.
We are committed to conducting our biomedical and behavioral research involving human subjects under rigorous ethical principles. The Institutional Review Board has been established to comply with existing regulations of the federal government in accordance with the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Rights (45 CFR 46), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations (21 CFR 50, 56), and with the Federalwide Assurance granted by the H.H.S. Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP). We have also agreed to adhere to the statements of ethical principles as described in The Nuremberg Code, The Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Human Subjects of Research, Report of the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research.
This fundamental commitment to the protection of human participants applies to all Memorial Hospital research involving human participants regardless of whether the research is funded through Government, non-profit or industry sponsors.
If you'd like more information or wish to apply for subject participation, you can contact our Research Compliance Department can be reached at 1400 E. Boulder St., Colorado Springs, CO 80909, by phone 719-365-5042, or fax 719-365-8733.
Guided by the principles of The Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research, the MHSIRB reviews all human research protocols in accordance with federal regulations, State laws, and local and Hospital policies. The MHSIRB is comprised of members from various disciplines in the social/behavioral sciences, medical, and community/lay members to assure a comprehensive review process. Through a collaborative partnership, the MHSIRB assists investigators in the protection of human subjects. These subjects are truly scarce resource, worthy of our gratitude, respect, and protection. Memorial Hospital is committed to conducting its biomedical and behavioral research involving human subjects under rigorous ethical principles.
