Memorial Hospital for Children in partnership with The Children's Hospital is home to southern Colorado’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), providing the highest level of continuous nursing and medical care for critically ill and injured children through 17 years of age. This highly specialized unit is closely connected to Memorial's Emergency Department to provide a seamless continuum of care and treatment from the moment the child arrives at Memorial Hospital for Children.
Hospital-based pediatric physicians provide around-the-clock medical support for children in this unit and communicate directly with the child’s primary care physician or pediatrician and family. The PICU also has the capability to care for children with special needs, including those requiring long-term ventilation support.
Care is provided by a multidisciplinary health care team including, pediatric intensivists who specialize in intensive-care medicine for severe illnesses, respiratory therapists, child life specialists, specially trained registered nurses and critical care technicians.
The health care team recognizes the importance of the entire family in the care of a critically ill child and encourages family involvement during all phases of care and decision-making.
