| Getting a Car Seat |

Shopping Tips
|
- DO NOT buy car seats from thrift stores or garage sales.
- Use only car seats that are less than 6 years old, have not been in a crash, have the instruction booklet and all parts in good working order. Verify recall status by contacting NHTSA.
- Be sure the car seat is appropriate for your child’s age, weight and height; is easy-to–use; and fits well in your car.
- Consumer and parent magazines and other sources may recommend various models, but the car seat you use must fit your particular vehicle and your child.
- All car seats sold must meet the NHTSA 30 mph crash standard, regardless of price.
- Babies should be rear-facing until at least 1 year and 20 pounds; use a forward facing car seat with a 5-point harness until at least 40 pounds; use a booster seat until the child is about 4 feet 9 inches tall.

| Life Support Center |
Catholic Charities

|
Local Retail Stores
|
- Retail stores carry a variety of car seats.
- Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Burlington and some others will let you try floor models in your car, if you ask. Others require prior purchase. Ask about return policy if car seat does not fit!
- A 5-point harness convertible seat suitable for birth through about age 4 can be obtained for about $70, backless booster and high-back booster seats are about $15-40.
- DO NOT use tightening tools to install car seats, or shoulder belt adjustors that attach the lap and shoulder belts together—both can be dangerous.
